Craig Hanaumi Service Award

Detective Alex Slusser has been with the Bellevue Police Department since 2013. In 2018, Detective Slusser was selected for BPD’s Special Enforcement Team, where he was quickly recognized for his exceptional skills and dedication. He was chosen to serve as a Vice Detective within the unit. This role requires keen investigative skills and also a compassionate understanding of the vulnerable people victimized by crimes such as Human Trafficking and the Commercial Sexual Abuse of Minors. Despite the often-grim nature of these investigations, Detective Slusser approaches his work with an inspiring and impactful resolve. He advocates for justice and continually seeks to ensure that victims’ voices are heard and their experiences are validated. 

He is instrumental in advancing our efforts to combat human and commercial sex trafficking in Bellevue and the region. His colleagues commend his high level of competence, meticulous attention to detail, and unwavering commitment to the mission. He serves as a regional leader, sounding board, and teacher, guiding others who are new to human trafficking investigations. The results of his efforts are tangible—numerous arrests and successful prosecutions have disrupted large-scale networks of exploitation that threatened the safety of our community members.  

Detective Slusser’s impact extends far beyond criminal apprehension. He understands that many individuals caught in trafficking situations have faced unimaginable trauma and often carry deep emotional scars. He approaches each interaction with empathy, and treats victims with respect and dignity. His ability to connect with those in crisis has led many young women to seek help. He offers them a way out, hope, and a chance for a better future. His tireless efforts to guide these women and juveniles away from “the life” reflect a profound commitment to their well-being and rehabilitation.
