Bellevue Police Youth Camp Inspires Future Leaders
In just three years, the Bellevue Police Department’s Youth Camp has grown into a powerful program that inspires young people to learn about public safety and community leadership. Launched in 2023 with support from Bellevue Police Foundation, the camp offers students a unique opportunity to spend three days alongside Bellevue police officers, gaining firsthand insight into the world of policing.
Originally designed for middle school students, the program was so well-received that it expanded in 2024 to include high school participants. This summer’s camp welcomed both middle and high school cohorts. This year, 60 students took part in activities that included hands-on demonstrations, team-building exercises, and discussions with officers about public safety, community service, and the values of integrity and respect.
The camp started with a police escort motorcade through the city and concluded with a memorable graduation ceremony at Bellevue City Hall in the Council Chambers, where students were recognized for their hard work and commitment. When asked what was most memorable, students mentioned everything from “speaking in front of a group for the first time” and “how to collect fingerprints” to “jiu-jitsu and the ropes course were a blast”. Family members and city leaders joined in celebrating the participants, who walked away not only with a greater understanding of policing but also with stronger connections to their community.
“The goal of Youth Camps is to build better relationships and build trust, between police officers and our youth. based on mutual respect. And to hopefully inspire our next generation,” said Chief Shirley.
Thanks to the ongoing support of the Bellevue Police Foundation, Youth Camp continues to grow — offering students an experience that is both educational and empowering.
