Building Bridges: Recent Police Community Academy Highlights
The recent Police Community Academy brought together a diverse group of community members for an engaging and informative nine-week journey into the work of modern policing. Designed to build understanding, transparency, and trust, the academy offered participants a behind-the-scenes look at the responsibilities, challenges, and decision-making officers face every day.
Each week focused on a different aspect of the department’s operations. Participants explored patrol procedures, investigations, use of force, and crisis response, while also learning about specialized units such as K9, traffic enforcement, and community outreach. Instructors included experienced officers and professional staff who shared real-world examples, answered questions candidly, and encouraged open dialogue. After the very first class of the 2026 Community Academy, one participant shared that “The session was organized, informative and fun! Staff/speakers were knowledgeable and did a great job”.
One of the most impactful elements of the academy was the opportunity for hands-on learning. Attendees participated in scenario-based exercises that highlighted how quickly situations can evolve and how critical communication, judgment, and training are in the field. These experiences helped bridge the gap between perception and reality, offering a deeper appreciation for the complexity of police work.
The academy also emphasized the importance of partnership. Participants gained insight into how the department collaborates with community organizations, schools, and local leaders to prevent crime and improve quality of life. Conversations throughout the program fostered mutual respect and gave attendees a platform to share their perspectives and experiences.
By the end of the nine weeks, participants walked away with more than just knowledge — they built meaningful connections with officers and with one another. Many expressed a renewed sense of confidence in their police department and a stronger commitment to staying engaged in their community.
The Police Community Academy continues to be a valuable investment in building trust and strengthening relationships. By opening its doors and inviting the community inside, the department reinforces a simple but powerful idea: public safety is a shared responsibility, and lasting progress happens when we work together.
