Board Commits $100,000 to DFR
The Bellevue Police Foundation is proud to announce a landmark commitment of $100,000 to launch the Drone as First Responder (DFR) program, a transformative initiative designed to enhance public safety and operational efficiency within the City of Bellevue. This significant investment underscores the Foundation’s dedication to providing law enforcement with cutting-edge technology that saves lives and strengthens community trust.
The DFR program represents a paradigm shift in emergency response. Unlike traditional drone deployments where a pilot travels to a scene, DFR technology allows high-speed drones to be staged on rooftops and launched remotely the moment a 911 call is received. Often arriving at the scene minutes before ground units, these drones provide arriving officers and dispatchers with real-time, high-definition overhead video. This “eye in the sky” allows for immediate situational assessment, helping to locate suspects, find missing persons, and evaluate the severity of incidents without putting personnel at unnecessary risk.
Beyond tactical advantages, the $100,000 grant supports the Foundation’s mission of fiscal stewardship and strategic innovation. By utilizing drones to clear “founded” calls or determine if a situation requires a smaller police footprint, the department can manage resources more effectively. This program also plays a vital role in de-escalation; having visual clarity before making contact allows officers to approach situations with a more informed and calm strategy. Through this funding, the Bellevue Police Foundation continues to bridge the gap between municipal budgets and the advanced tools necessary to maintain Bellevue’s standing as one of the safest cities in the nation.
